Thumbnail preview

Hovering the progress bar shows a sprite-cropped thumbnail popup that tracks the cursor, for sources whose manifest carries a tiled image track:

  • DASH: an image AdaptationSet following the DASH-IF thumbnail_tile convention (schemeIdUri="http://dashif.org/guidelines/thumbnail_tile").
  • HLS: an EXT-X-IMAGE-STREAM-INF entry in the master playlist, pointing to an image playlist with an EXT-X-TILES grid. This is what AWS MediaConvert emits with image-based trick play on an HLS or CMAF output.

It is entirely built in, no setup beyond the thumbnails constructor option (default true):

new EvePlayer(container, { thumbnails: true });

The manifest is fetched and parsed for this independently of @videojs/http-streaming, which only parses audio/video renditions and never sees the image track. Whatever size the source encodes its tiles at, the popup is scaled to about 160px wide.

Scope

  • Not part of the public API surface: no getter, no event. It is a self-contained UI feature, like PiP and the quality selector.
  • Sources without a thumbnail track (including plain MP4 and MP3) simply show nothing on hover.
  • Out of scope: sidecar WebVTT thumbnail tracks, $Time$-based DASH SegmentTemplates, and HLS image playlists without an EXT-X-TILES grid (one full-frame image per segment).
